Located in the heart of Craigieburn, Victoria, Splash is a premium leisure complex that provides access to a wide range of health, fitness and lifestyle programs and top of the range facilities and equipment.

Never underestimate the importance of gym layout. In this video, Jonathan from Splash Aqua Park and Leisure Centre in Craigieburn (VIC) talks about how he chose to arrange the Hammer Strength and Life Fitness equipment in a progressive way to benefit his members.

Challenge

To better service the community members who are “actually quite serious about training” and to ensure there is always enough equipment for everyone who comes in.

Solution

“A lot of council gyms like to be very safe and very ‘community’. But the community is also full of people who are actually quite serious about training, and they want pin-loaded and plate-loaded equipment, and functional fitness pieces. So, we made sure we had enough room for that.” To avoid members being unable to get on to a piece of equipment, especially during peak periods, Jonathan opted to include multiple pieces of similar equipment. “We've got three lat pulldowns, three seated rows, but we've also then got a plate-loaded row and then a pin-loaded row. So, we've essentially got five rowing machines and six lat pull downs, and we’ve got 10 cable attachments where you can do other things. We also have 8 squat racks.”

Result

The gym was designed so that the further you get into it, the more advanced the equipment gets. It's divided up into cardio pin-loaded, free space, plate-loaded, free weights; so, if you're a beginner and you don't want to mix it up with some of the guys or weights then you can stay in the free weights space; you don’t have to go anywhere else. Having multiple pieces of similar equipment ensures that when members come in, regardless of how busy the centre is, they should be able to get on the equipment they want. “So, if you're going to do overhead pressing, you've got five different options; or if you're going to do squats, you've got a whole bunch of different options.” This way, we always have enough equipment for everyone who comes in.
